Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body produces no insulin — it requires lifelong insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes is more common and occurs when the body cannot use insulin effectively — it is often manageable with lifestyle changes and medication.

Type 2 diabetes can go into remission with significant lifestyle changes, weight loss, and in some cases bariatric surgery. It cannot be permanently cured, but it can be controlled to the point where medication is no longer needed.

A regular check of the feet for signs of nerve damage, poor circulation, infections, or ulcers — which are serious complications of diabetes that can lead to amputation if not caught early.

At minimum every 3–6 months for HbA1c monitoring, and annually for eyes, kidneys, feet, and heart assessments. Your diabetologist will customise your review schedule.
